Yoga has an immense history spanning thousands of years. Like everything that's stuck around for a long time it's gone through a series of evolutions, and grown past what many Yoga gurus may have imagined.

Traditionally, yoga is based on a student-teacher relationship where the student chooses to follow the teachings, or interpretations of ancient yoga texts, of a certain teacher with whom they resonate with. In modern times, Yoga is accessible at the click of a button and there are so many teachers it's hard to figure out who is the best fit. In my experience, yoga is the best tool that I have found that helps me be a better human.

So, how do you know you've found a good teacher? It all depends on you. What your goals are and what you're ultimately searching for within yourSelf, and in a Yoga class. From my perspective there are a lot of "yoga" classes out there, but they are more fitness classes where students are looking to enhance their outward appearance. I used to think leaving a yoga class drenched in sweat was the goal. And that may be exactly what you are looking for!

However, based on my experience with my yoga training in India, and here in Wichita, yoga is more of a fitness class for the inner body - connecting with your inner Self through breath and your movements. Making every aspect of yoga mindful. From my perspective, yoga classes that make this connection are few and far between in the Wichita area. If you're lucky enough to have found a teacher who bridges that gap - hold onto them tight.

The body is a scary place to be if you've been living in your mind and detached from your body. Our bodies hold memories and emotions that are sometimes brought to the surface through a mindful yoga practice. Finding a teacher who can hold the space for you while you allow your emotions to surface can make a huge difference in the quality of your personal yoga practice.

As a yoga teacher, I try to give my students the best experience of themSelves at a level they are comfortable with. I don't expect them to perform, or do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. One of my favorite things to say at the start of a class is, "Everything I say is just a suggestion - you know your body best. Do what feels good to you!"

At the end of the day, you have to do what feels good to you. And that might just be a fitness-based yoga class that you leave drenched in sweat.

But, if you're searching for more, I encourage you to try a different approach. Slow down, tune into your body's sensations, and give yourSelf a chance to connect with your inner landscape. You may just find what you've been searching for was inside all along.

Sending love and gratitude - Kaylee
